The town of Lake Placid, NY is known for being host to winter Olympic games. Just a few miles out of town is Whiteface Mountain, the fifth largest mountain in New York State with an elevation of 4,865 feet. On a clear day from the summit one can see the mountains of Vermont as well as the skyscrapers in Montreal, Canada.
As with many resort areas, the town also boasts some very nice restaurants and accomodations. One such hotel is the Whiteface Lodge. It’s located on the north end of town on a sprawling property with views of the mountain range. It’s Adirondack theme, high end amenities and attention to detail have earn it accolades year after year.
Just before Christmas we had the opportunity to stay there. The typical overcast gray upstate New York winter weather did not offer many photography opportunities, but one evening I wandered the grounds braving the 15* temperatures to shoot some nightscapes of the Lodge. These were captured with the 5D Mark III and 17-40L lens on an Induro CT-214 tripod with a Sirui K30x ball head.
Arriving at the property, a nicely decorated gatehouse and field of well lit evergreens greets you.

Further up the drive, you arrive at the carport decorated equally as nice. Here you can have your vehicle valet parked and your luggage taken to your room. Note the antler chandeliers.

Also located behind the main building is the pool house, which boats an indoor – outdoor heated pool and two outdoor hot tubs. I walked a few feet through the drifting snow off the main walkway to capture this eerie view of the pool house. The stone channel is the overflow for the pool. Steam from the 80* water can be seen wafting upwards into the frigid night air.
